30 Song Recommendations From My Library

Not everyone will like all of these songs, but they are cool and off the beaten path:

  1. My Lady Frustration – Fela Kuti (funky Kool & the Gang vibe with a Brazilian flavor)
  2. All That Meat and No Potatoes – Louis Armstrong (need I say more?)
  3. Bad Girl – Lee Moses (hard to find track, but sincere soulful song that deserved to be a hit)
  4. Big Chief – Professor Longhair (just try not to smile and tap your feet to this song, it will have you humming it all day…with a smile)
  5. Big Mouth USA (Slow Version) – Jim Ford (nice counter balance to all the media, politics, reality tv, etc. etc. etc.)
  6. Can You Get To That – Mavis Staples (amazing career, but experiencing a renaissance with Jeff Tweedy from Wilco producing a couple recent albums)
  7. Cattle Call – Eddy Arnold (don’t judge me, it is a good song)
  8. Don’t Take Your Guns To Town – Johnny Cash (it is a good song and perhaps worth resurrecting as a PSA for my NRA card carrying friends!)
  9. El Mariachi – Gypsy Kings
  10. Fire A Mus Mus Tail – The Ethiopians (Reggae music to welcome warmer temperatures and attitudes!)
  11. Feel the Lightning – Dan Deacon (electronic Mobyish song – but I listen to this often as my iced Americano kicks in on my way to work)
  12. Goodnight Irene – Keith Richards (he recently released an album, this is a great peaceful cover of the old Leadbelly tune)
  13. Homegrown Tomatoes – Guy Clark (just a lovesong about homegrown tomatoes)
  14. I Washed My Hands In Muddy Water – Stonewall Jackson (this is how I like my country music)
  15. Jekoro – Ajoyo (I call Jaclyn, Jacalope – Jaclyn and I sing this song together, but sing “JACALOPE!” every time the Jekoro is said on the song, you would love it.
  16. Just Like Tom Thumb’s Blues – Ramblin’ Jack Eliot (cover of a Dylan song, but darn good)
  17. Les Champs-Elysees – Joe Dassin (my french teacher, Miss Lewis, used to sing this song, the only thing I took from two years of her class + French tutor – sorry parents)
  18. Money (That’s What I Want) – David Gray (good cover that weaves in Toot’s In The Maytal’s Pressure Drop)
  19. Quelqu’un m’a dit – Carli Bruni (not sure what is being said here, but I like it)
  20. Route 30 – Jolie Holland (if you like this song, you’ll like the whole darn album – rambling road trip music)
  21. Satisfied Mind (live) – Jeff Buckley (this guy sang)
  22. Shake Sugaree – Rhiannon Giddens (southern charm)
  23. Soulville – Ben Webster (if you don’t like jazz, but want to find an easily accessible song that you could appreciate, other than Dave Brubeck’s Take Five, this is it, mellow, but far from watered down)
  24. St. James Infirmary – Allen Toussaint (if you like this song, buy the album, wish I had more quiet moments where I could enjoy this album from start to finish)
  25. Take Me to the Pilot – Elton John (not sure how I never heard this song until recently, it is incredible – he is one heck of a performer)
  26. Talk Is Cheap – Chet Faker (Jaclyn gets nervous when she hears this song because it is an amorous jam)
  27. Tennessee Time – Valerie June (I like her voice, Jaclyn does not. This album has lots of gems, that is if you like her voice)
  28. Una Notte Napoli – Pink Martini (once again, don’t judge me – kind of absurd dramatic tune in a different language, but I buy into it)
  29. Unbelievers – Vampire Weekend (This is my favorite song from their catalog and it doesn’t pop up often)
  30. Wasting Time – Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats (good stuff – hoping to see them in concert)
